By open-mindedness is meant not so much a predisposition toward others and acceptance of diversity, but the ability to turn one’s gaze inward and take note of one’s own way of being, with its limitations, idiosyncrasies, merits and flaws. Openness to oneself first, and to everything else as a consequence.
