On the night before her death, documents say that Madeline's mom, Jennifer Soto, wanted to sleep alone — so she sent her daughter to bed with the man accused of killing her. That man, Stephan Sterns, claims to have dropped the teen off near her middle school around 8:30 the next morning, but investigators maintain that by 7:30 a.m., the girl was already dead in the passenger seat of his car. Right after Sterns and Jennifer, who are in a relationship, reported Madeline missing on Feb. 26, authorities say the mother told them she had seen her daughter that morning before she left for school. New evidence released by prosecutors says that by the next day, the woman had a different account. According to documents, Jennifer told authorities she actually did not see her daughter in the morning, but instead, only the night before. A detective's report says Jennifer told them that around 11 p.m., she "sent (Madeline) and Stephan up to a guest bedroom." She said they had planned to all sleep together in the same room, but instead, Jennifer "stated she needed to get some rest due to her new job making her very tired, she would sleep better alone."
