Volunteers work to restore the Appalachian Trail after Helene’s destruction

Last fall’s Hurricane Helene brought historic rainfall and record-breaking flooding across the Southeast. In the immediate aftermath, downed trees and destroyed bridges caused 430 miles of the famed Appalachian Trail to be closed.
