Globally, women and girls are particularly vulnerable in times of war and conflict. During such times, existing inequalities are magnified, infrastructure and social relations are broken down, and human rights are at risk. Research shows that more often than not, women bear the brunt of the secondary and lasting effects of war and conflict, including food insecurity, displacement, heightened human trafficking, and disrupted access to reproductive and health care. Historically, women have also been left out of peace talks and conflict prevention despite data showing a substantially higher degree of success and longevity for peace agreements negotiated by women. On this episode of Breakfast Special in line with International Women’s Day, Rebekah Lim, Associate Director for Global Engagement at the Singapore Red Cross - which has been hard at work with empowering women and girls living in conflict zones such as Afghanistan and Ukraine, through their humanitarian projects on-the-ground - shares her insights.
