The main advantage of this technique is that it gives the user something to hold onto The user can focus on each piece and feel confident that they are doing something productive HOW CAN WE USE THIS WITH CLIENTS? Use this technique to break a task down into fragments and to provide feedback to your clients For example, if you wanted to get a client to do an exercise for their hand, you could set out the exercise and, as the client does each part, you could give the client the following feedback: Good, you€™ve now done the exercise for two minutes That’€™s right, you€™ve done three sets of that exercise Fantastic, you€™ve now done three exercises Good, you have now done half an hour €œThat€™s right, you€™ve done the whole exercise€ By breaking the task down into fragments, the client can focus on each one and feel confident that they are doing something productive OTHER EXAMPLES Find examples of where you could use this technique Also, think about what you could use it for in your own life For example, if you wanted to get yourself to go for a walk, you could break that down into the following fragments: Get out of bed Put on my shoes Get the keys for the front door Get outside Walk for 10 minutes If you had a task that you wanted to get someone else to do, you could break it down into the following fragments: You could also use this technique in a more general sense For example, in a job interview, you could use this technique to help you overcome anxiety
